Ubisoft announces an upcoming open-world Star Wars video game

If you’ve read my previous blog, you know that Star Wars and open-world games are my thing. I love big maps that give you the freedom to explore and play at your pace, as I’ve said before. So, when I heard that an open-world Star Wars game was in the works, I immediately broke into my happy dance. If you’ve ever used a flashlight as a lightsaber and swung it at invisible enemies, you’ve pretty much done the same dance, except I often put it to music, hence...the dance. 

Seriously, the moment I heard this news I felt like I had to tell someone. And who better than those that I’ve my favorite games and Star Wars stories with! We don’t know much about this upcoming game yet and what we do know is pretty vague in itself. With that in mind, this post is going to be a pretty quick read. I know you love my longer, more drawn out blog posts, so try to savor it and give it a couple of reads if needed. 

Here’s what we know so far.

According to numerous sources, including Ubisoft themselves, the game is currently in the early development phase, which probably means they’re in the process of setting the table, so to speak. They’re forming the plot, crafting characters, building the world/setting and figuring out who else they need to help bring the game to life. Speaking of which, numerous reports indicate that the force is strong with this project already. There are a plethora of applicants looking to attach their name to what’s expected to be one of the biggest Star Wars games ever created. Hopefully, it lives up to the hype!

One big name that has been added to mix is Massive Entertainment, which partnered with Ubisoft in the creation of The Division. With Massive attached to the project, we can expect a game packed with great action, realistic surroundings and large maps, based on my experience with both Division titles. The CEO of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot, has made a statement himself regarding the development of the game and those who are already involved with the project - “We are very proud of this collaboration, which is a testament to Ubisoft leadership and expertise, notably in creating amazing works. It is another demonstration of our capacity to build partnerships with the biggest names in the entertainment and technology space."

Of course, nothing can be done without Lucasfilm Games’ blessing and involvement as well. Together, these gaming giants are in a position to change the entire spectrum of the Star Wars game series...if they do it right.

All I can say is that I’m super excited for this game and the fact that Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment are willing to make it an open-world game is impressive, to say the least. A project of this magnitude is a big undertaking, especially when it comes to Star Wars. But, the fact that all three studios are willing to tackle it together tells me that they are serious about making this game something special.
