Not too long ago, I posted a blog that highlighted our top-selling wargaming mats. That post sparked an idea that I thought would be pretty cool. I’ve sort of turned that post inside out, so to speak, to give you a better look at some of the best games for our wargaming mats. Some of these games may look familiar, especially if you’ve read our previous wargaming posts, but this time we’re going just a step further.
In what follows, I’ll give you a brief highlight of each game along with a list of playmats that best serve as the backdrop and terrain for these miniature games.
So, let’s get started!
If you’re obsessed with Star Wars and flight combat tabletop games, X-Wing Miniatures belongs at the top of your wishlist. This action-packed, fast-paced ship combat game takes you to the far reaches of space and places you in the cockpit of some of the most agile, well-armed starfighters ever to take flight! By assuming the role of either Imperial or Rebel squad leader, the game tasks you with leading your squadron into battle using TIE Fighters and X-Wings. And you know what can happen when these fierce fighters go head to head!
X-Wing features three awesome missions and some of the best-looking miniatures ever crafted. Each miniature is designed and painted down to the smallest detail, which makes them even more stunning to look at (and play with). This close attention to detail creates more realistic gameplay as well. And if you really want to advance your game experience, you’ll want an awesome wargaming mat as your galactic battlefield backdrop.
Some of the best wargaming mats for Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures include:
Believe it or not, this is a title that actually dates back all the way to 1984. Now, there have been a plethora of armored combat games that have followed it, but when it comes to tabletop gaming with great-looking miniatures/figurines, BattleTech is still among one of the very best! BattleTech is an awesome mech-piloting game with all the excitement and missile-launching goodness that one could hope for. Even though it’s been 36 years since the original idea was first released, this game is still a popular choice among avid tabletop gamers.
BattleTech allows you to suit up and take control of your own mech-warrior gear, which comes fully-equipped with a wide variety of firepower and abilities. You can even create a custom mech-suit from scratch and give it all the weaponry and capabilities you need to be the baddest Robo-warrior ever to roam the battlefield!
Of course, to play this game properly you’re going to need a suitable battlefield to stomp around on. And nothing makes a better backdrop for BattleTech than these amazing wargaming mats, which include:
Ready to put the pedal to the metal? Car Wars introduces you to a new world of vehicular combat, as it merges a futuristic style with good old-fashioned four-wheel mayhem. Think Mad Max meets Speed Racer. The game allows you to build your cards from the ground up and fit it with all the weaponry/armory you need to survive the threats that are stalking the open road. And by that, I mean the other player’s cars, of course. Yes, you can expect a lot of crashes, rollovers and sabotage along the way.
Each conflict that you survive earns you more abilities and money to buy more advanced cars, trucks and combat gear. From flamethrowers to machine guns to laser cannons and a lot more, this game literally puts you in the driver seat and takes you for a ride that you’ll never forget. Buckle up!
Some of the best wargaming mats we recommend for this game include:

This tabletop miniature combat game casts you as the sorcerous warcaster. As warcaster, you must build and lead your army of steam-powered warjacks to the battle and use your magical ability to control/organize their every movement. War Machine places you smack dab in the middle of the action and makes you feel the fast-paced, intense nature of the battlefield. Once the two armies collide, you’ll experience non-stop combat that will test your strength, stamina and tactfulness. So, you best have a strategy in place if you’re going to have any chance of overtaking your rival warcaster.
Every cannon blast, hammer smash, claw rip and direct hit inches you closer to victory. But remember, brawn is nothing without brains and in order to secure your win, you’ll need to have a solid plan going in. In this game, one army is destined for victory and the other is destined for the scrap yard. Which army will you command?
Some of the best wargaming mats you can use to get the most out of your War Machine gameplay experience include:
I figured if we began with Star Wars, we should conclude with it as well to bring this blog full-circle, so to speak. You might have seen Star Wars Armada mentioned in previous posts, but we never bothered to really dive in and highlight what it’s all about. No doubt, there are some of you who have already played Armada (in which case you should let me know which playmat design you prefer), but for those who haven’t, this game should definitely be on your list as well!
Much like X-Wing, Star Wars Armada is a starship dogfight game that puts you in the center of a massive battle between the Imperial Navy and the Rebel Alliance. Using your strategy and tactical skills, it’s up to you to assemble/lead your fleet of Star Destroyers, TIE fighters, Nebulon Frigates, and X-Wings to victory. The fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance. Are you up for the challenge...Admiral?
We have quite a few wargaming mats that would make a great backdrop for Star Wars Armada. These mats include:
