Niantic and Nintendo are partnering up for a Pikmin game

If you love Pokémon GO and AR, then you’re going to love this! I recently caught wind of a new AR game that will be coming from the same creative minds (Niantic) behind one of Nintendo’s most popular games to date, Pokémon GO. We all know GO by now, especially as passionate Pokémon fans, but it sounds like Pikmin has the potential to be just as popular for mobile gamers. 

I don’t know about you, but ever since GO came out, I’ve been waiting for Niantic to come out with something fresh and fun for us to sink our teeth into, and this newest title may be it. The details behind Pikmin are scarce and kind of vague right now, but I just thought it was worth taking a closer look at. And when more develops, I’ll make an update post that way we’re all in the loop together. For the time being, let’s just focus on the little bit of info that we have right now!

With Nintendo and Niantic having so much success in their last collaboration, I think it was only a matter of time until they partnered up on another project, especially when augmented reality (AR) is involved once again. However, this time around, Niantic’s Tokyo Studio will be taking the lead in the development of their new Pikmin game. The game itself is actually based on the original Pikmin game titles that began back in 2001 and have been enhanced on Nintendo Switch as recently as 2020. Many of you may already be familiar with those games by now as well.

Here’s what Niantic has to say about it so far: “The app will include gameplay activities to encourage walking and make walking more delightful.” I was kind of hoping for something a little more in-depth, but I guess so early on I wasn’t surprised by their vagueness. All we can hope for is that it presents us with an even more fun way to play Pikmin, and if we’re lucky, it will have that same signature look and feel that made Pokémon GO so enjoyable for so many!

As I said in the beginning, we don’t know very much at this point, which is why this post is going to be shorter than most. Heck, we can’t even say for sure when the game is expected to be released. All we do know is that they’re shooting for later on this year, but that can change very easily. We’ll definitely keep our eyes and ears open from here on out.

I just like knowing that we were one of the first to cover the release of this game so early on, that way we’re ahead of the game, so to speak when all of the juicy details come out!
