The Weekly Wave

Welcome back to the Weekly Wave! Let’s see what news, updates, and announcements have risen to the surface this week!

Pokémon releases a ‘My First Battle’ set for young Trainers!

We don’t know about you, but when we first started playing Pokémon back in the late '90s, there were many of us who were not entirely sure how to battle with our cards. Trading was easy, but being a Trainer took some more understanding. Even after watching all the re-runs and buying all the packs, young Trainers today find themselves in the same boat. That’s why Pokémon has decided to launch a new ‘My First Battle’ bundle, specifically designed to show new Trainers the ropes.

Pokemon's My First Battle

The set itself has been packed up with all of the essentials needed for two Trainers to start their Pokémon adventures on the right foot. Those who purchase one will find a bundle with the following items:

  • 2 mini decks of 17 cards each
  • 2 playmats
  • 1 rulebook
  • 1 large metallic Pokémon coin
  • A sheet of damage counters
  • 6 Prize tokens

Speaking from personal experience, we can tell you that ALL of these items would have been a welcomed addition to our collection, especially the rulebook and damage counter. Let’s just say those pieces alone would have solved a lot of conflicts at recess and after school. So, if you have a young Trainer who is looking to begin on the path of becoming the very best, this is one starter bundle that you definitely want them to have.

With that said, you can find the ‘My First Battle’ set available in the Pokémon Center for purchase.

Konami announces Yu-Gi-Oh! Phantom Nightmare booster set!

If you’ve been waiting for another awesome Yugi booster to come out, your wish has been granted, but you’ll have to wait until next year to get it. Konami recently made an announcement that it will release a new Phantom Nightmare for Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. Phantom Nightmare is a 100-card booster that will feature:

  • 10 Secret Rares
  • 14 Ultra Rares
  • 26 Super Rares
  • 50 Commons

Out of those 100 cards, 24 of them will come as Quarter-Century Secret Rares. The monsters that will be included in this set will be a nice variety that some should recognize. The same can be said for the trap and spell cards as well. The booster itself will also introduce a new Yubel strategy. According to Konami, “the strategy gives players the ability to power up using the original three Yubel forms or use the new Continuous Trap Card that lets players Fusion Summon a new Yubel Fusion Monster.”

Konami has more details and info about Phantom Nightmare on their site, including the official release date. The booster set is scheduled to be available for purchase on February 9, 2024, so we’re still a few months away from it officially hitting storefronts in the U.S., but you can be sure that we will have the date circled on our calendar.
