The Weekly Wave

Welcome back to the Weekly Wave! Let’s see what news, updates, and announcements have risen to the surface this week!

NFL linebacker pockets over $600K after Pokémon card auction!

We thought our fellow Trainers and sports fanatics would like this story. After all, anyone who sells a Pokémon card for $670,000 is definitely worth a closer look, especially when the seller is (was) a pro football player. That’s right, earlier this week, Blake Martinez, linebacker for the Las Vegas Raiders, auctioned off a GEM MINT 1998 Pokémon Illustrator card.

Pokémon Illustrator card

This same card sold for close to a million dollars back in February, but that didn’t seem to phase the 28-year-old linebacker. In fact, Martinez, who had just recently signed with the Raiders, decided to retire from pro football shortly after the sale was made. We know that sounds strange, but that’s the story. Apparently, Martinez decided to retire once the sale was finalized.

The story goes that Martinez discovered the card after cleaning out his basement. He had been collecting Pokémon cards from a very young age, but had to put the hobby aside when he reached the pro level. It took a worldwide pandemic to get him back into the Pokémon game. This is when he decided to do some digging around his house.

After re-discovering the card, Martinez decided to get a quote from numerous sources, including the Pawn Stars, who said that the card in its condition could fetch over a million dollars. While the card came in at only $672k after the gavel came down, Martinez still decided to walk away from football to pursue other endeavors. Who knows, maybe we’ll see him return to his first hobby and find a way to make more money than he would have in the NFL. It could happen.

Pokémon TCG Live’s Global Beta has launched!

We actually covered the announcement of Pokémon TCG Live around this time last year. Of course, we didn’t have as many details about it as we do now, but it has been on our radar for a while now. Just last week, Pokémon announced that their TCG Live app has gone global with a beta that is now available for players to download on a host of platforms. Those platforms include iOS, Android devices, PC, and macOS.

Pokémon TCG Live

Since Pokémon TCG Live is being launched on a global scale, it will be available in several languages as well, such as English, Brazilian, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. What makes this app special is how it gives players the ability to challenge fellow Trainers from around the world using unique decks that they created themselves.

The app allows you to collect cards in numerous ways, making it easier for players of every level to build their best deck and put them to the test against some of the best trainers in the world. And since so many people will be on, you won’t have any trouble finding a match either.

You can learn more about Pokémon TCG Live via the official website. There you will find more info about the app and download it to your preferred platform.
