THE WEEKLY WAVE

Welcome back to the Weekly Wave! Let’s see what news, updates, and announcements have risen to the surface this week!

Pokémon TCG unveils their new online Illustration Exhibition!

Whether you’ve been playing Pokémon since the 90s or just started this year, you must check out the new online Illustration Exhibition that officially went live last week. Pokémon has a rich history that’s filled with some of the coolest-looking cards fans have ever laid eyes on. Over the years, the illustrations featured on these cards have gotten better and better, as the game continues to grow more popular for players on every level.

It’s important for the entire community to commemorate just how far Pokémon and its cards have come since first bursting on the TCG scene back in 1996. So, on August 10th, Pokémon decided to open an online exhibition that features a wide range of awesome card illustrations. These illustrations have been categorized into three unique themes (exhibits, if you will), which are: Life, History, and Artist.

The Life exhibit explores various landscapes and habitats, and the Pokémon that populate them. History turns back the clock and takes you through the chronicle of Pokémon TCG illustrations and how they’ve evolved over time. Then there’s the Artist exhibit, which highlights the different artists who helped Pokémon bring these cards, and their illustrations, to life.

We want to remind you that just like all good things, this Illustration Exhibition won’t last forever. As of today, the Exhibition has been live for a week and will remain open to all online users until October 23, 2022. So, you still have a lot of time to experience the exhibition for yourself. If you haven’t already, we recommend that you do so as soon as you can, especially since there’s so much to see and explore.

Who won Whatnot’s $100K MTG Match?

After a lot of buildup, prep, and a brief postponement, Whatnot delivered on its promise and presented the $100K MTG match between Post Malone and Kyle (the lucky winner of the drawing) to the entire gaming community. The match was streamed via the Whatnot app on August 11th, where onlookers were able to watch Posty and Kyle go mana y mana. After a long battle that lasted well into the night, Kyle, who hadn’t played MTG in 20 years, shook hands with Post Malone and headed home with a $100K prize in his pocket!

Upon completing his five-day training with Reid Duke, Kyle was able to tap back into his inner spellcaster and put what he learned to good use against Posty, who played a good game as well. There are some out there who think that an opponent with more MTG experience and knowledge should have been the one to face Post Malone in this high-stakes match.

In fact, during the match, a lot of spectators were making their opinions known, and not being too subtle about it, which sparked some controversy. However, as we pointed out numerous times in our previous posts, the match was open to ALL participants, of every level of experience. Even though he may have seemed a bit out of place and lost at times, it’s important to remember that this was an open match that invited anyone to participate.

Yes, surely a more experienced player would have made for a better, smoother match, and a better viewing experience for the audience. But, the fact that Kyle wasn’t as skilled and still managed to pull out a massive victory made it fun for everyone in the end. Even The Professor from Tolarian Community College, who was in attendance, was thrilled by the outcome.

One interesting statistic to note is that with this victory, Kyle is now on the leaderboard for All-Time Money Leaders in Professional MTG. Not bad for someone who hadn’t played a full match in two decades!

Congratulations, Kyle! Well Done!
